8 critical Kalpwasis shifted to Safdarjung Hospital

SANGAM (ALLAHABAD): Eight out of the 18 victims of the Mahakumbhmela fire were critical and the health administration of the congregation had them airlifted to New Delhi on Saturday. It was decided that Rama Devi (50), Rani Gupta (35), Sheetal (10), Baijnath (22), Bhoomi (8),Shreyash (5), Nitesh (19) and Munni (60) needed better care and treatment than the make-shift arrangements near Allahabad.

The eight Kalpwasis (Pilgrims who spend the Hindu calendar month of Magh living an austere and minimalistic life at the holy confluence of Sangam) were lifted by an air ambulance of the Indian Air Force for better treatment at Safdarjung hospital. The burns department of Safdarjung is considered to be one of the best in the country. Ten victims of the fire are undergoing treatment at the special burns ward at MLN medical college in Allahabad, Additional Director, Health,Ramesh Kumar Srivastava said.

A total of 18 devotees were singed by a fire in makeshift tents at the Maha Kumbh on Friday. While police investigations on Saturday revealed that a leaking LPG cylinder was the cause behind the incident, a massive drive was underway in Maha Kumbh campus to apprise Kalpwasis and others about the proper handling of LPG gas cylinders.

SSP, Kumbh, RKS Rathore said, "We have deputed as many as 8 police teams who have been visiting camps and tents of Kalpwasis and seers educating them about fire safety measures." He added that the mela police have also issued a list of Do's and Don'ts for the safety of pilgrims.
