AIIMS service from June

BHUBANESWAR: The much-awaited hospital service of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here will start from June. "The progress of construction work is good," said Union minister of health and family welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad after visiting the campus at Sijua, on the outskirts of the city, on Wednesday.

Taking stock of the ongoing construction work, Azad said, "Two-and-a-half year's time is probably the fastest for completing a medical college and hospital of this magnitude. In case of AIIMS-Delhi the hospital started nine years after beginning of the medical college."

The hospital at Sijua will have 1,000 beds and 39 super-specialty branches. The academic session of AIIMS-Bhubaneswar started in 2012.

"I spoke to the executing agencies and asked them to fix a timeline for completion of the construction work. Our priority is fast completion of the hospital. Construction of district hospitals with 200 beds takes eight to nine years and we are constructing an AIIMS, which is equal to setting up a town. So it will definitely take some time," said Azad.

Giving emphasis on super-specialty health care services, Azad said, "We want to create more beds in super-specialty wards than that in the general ward. General health care can be provided by district hospitals but AIIMS will cater to critical care."

The minister highlighted several steps the ministry has taken in the past three years to develop human resources in the health sector.

The minister highlighted several steps the ministry has taken in the last three years to develop human resources in health sector. "The PG seat strength has increased by 100% in the last four years. Similarly we have increased the age of retirement for faculty members from 58 to 65 and rationalized the land acquisition process. But all these efforts will go haywire if students tend to stay in cities while 72% population is living in rural areas," the Union minister said. He asked students to go to rural areas of the state at least once a month.
