Army orders probe into shell blast at scrap shop in Ferozepur cantonment area

FEROZEPUR: Taking cognizance of the incidence in which an Army jawan was killed in a scrap blast on the premises of a scrap dealer inFerozepur cantonment area on January 17, the Army has ordered a court of inquiry into the matter.

Martoshi, the Army jawan of Assam Rifle Regiment, was killed in a blast when one the 10 rocket launcher shells that he had allegedly brought to sell to a scrap dealer in the civil area of Ferozepur cantonment exploded as he hammered it to convince the shopkeeper that it was junk ammunition. According to police, the jawan had brought 10 old rocket launcher shells to the junk shop located close to the cantonment area but dealer Manjit Singh refused to buy them.

The jawan remained adamant saying the shells were old and defused and there were no explosives inside them. In a bid to prove his point, he started to hammer the shells to show that they contained no explosives. However, one of the shells went off killing him on the spot.

Earlier, the Army had claimed that the person killed in the explosion was not from the service but a civilian, however, the police on Thursday night, identified the victim and a case under sections of the Ammunition Act 1908 and 304 A of IPC was registered.

Meanwhile, Ferozepur Cantonment Board has also initiated action against scrap shops that have been built illegally on defence land. Sources claim that Army jawans regularly bring scrap from inside the cantonment to sell it to the scrap dealers.
