BJP president election: Yashwant Sinha to take on Nitin Gadkari?

New Delhi: The BJP presidential elections seems to be heating up. As per reports, senior Bhartiya Janta Party leader, Yashwant Sinha may be in the fray for the top post of the party.

According to the latest reports, Yashwant Sinha collected the nomination papers from party headquarters, However there has been no official comment from his side as to whether he will take on the incumbent president Nitin Gadkari.

With the latest turn of events, the saffrom party seems to be clearly divided as far as elections for the BJP president election that is to be held on January 23 in Mumbai.

A section of the BJP has been opposed to the re-election of Gadkari with senior leaders like Yashwant Sinha, Jaswant Singh, Shatrughan Sinha and Ram Jethmalani publicly taking on the BJP president.

Meanwhile, in another development noted lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani had said yesterday that if nobody stood against Gadkari then he would contest for the president’s post.

“There should be a contest if Gadkari is contesting. If I decide to put up a token fight, I may stand,” he had said.

Jethmalani resigned from the BJP's national executive in November last year against Gadkari's continuation as the party chief in the wake of allegations of financial wrongdoing by investor firms in Purti Group linked to him.

However, as per party rules someone who wants to stand for the post of president then he has to be an ordinary member of the BJP for at least 15 years. Mahesh Jethmalani has been a member of the party for less than that number of years,

Meanwhile, the saffron party has been light-lipped on the contentious issue. Addressing a press conference in the national capital on the issue of ‘hindu terror’, refused to comment on whether Yashwant Sinha was in the fray. “I have nothing to offer,” he said.

Earlier, in a notification, the party had said that nomination papers will be filed on the same day (January 23) from 10 am to 11.30 am and scrutiny will be held from 11.30 am to 12 noon.

A date for election will be declared, in case of contest, after withdrawal of nomination between 12 noon and 12.30 pm.

In the absence of any contest, the elected candidate will be declared at 12.30 pm on January 23 itself.
