Calicut varsity arts fest gets caught in student dispute

MALAPPURAM: Uncertainty persists over the venue for the C-zone arts festival of CalicutUniversity as a result of an on-going dispute between the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) and the Students Federation of India (SFI).

MSF, a pro-IUML student organization, had announced that the festival would be conducted in PSMO College, Tirurangadi. However, the university union dominated by the SFI has decided to go ahead with the decision to conduct the festival on the Calicut University campus. The festival is scheduled to be held from February 8 to 12.

Earlier, the union had decided to conduct the festival at MES College, Ponnani. However, district executive committee member of the union K Fawas, who represents Malappuram and is also the convener of the C-zone festival, proposed PSMO College, Tirurangadi as the venue. The union rejected the proposal and decided to conduct the festival on the university campus.

A meeting convened by the dean of students' welfare with university union chairman Sameesh and executive committee member Fawas, on Sunday, failed to reach a consensus.

Following this the VC issued an order that the festival would be conducted preferably at PSMO College, Tirurangadi, subject to the final approval of the university syndicate. The decision was approved by the syndicate without further ado.

Events took a turn when the university union, on Monday, announced that only the contestants of the C-zone arts fest which is going to be conducted by the union, in the campus, are eligible to contest in inter-zone arts festival of the university.

Sameesh told TOI that the union cannot agree with the VC's order. Meanwhile, syndicate member T P Ashrafali said that the executive member of the union has the right to take the final decision regarding the venue to which the union should agree.
