Fast-track court opened in Ranchi

RANCHI: A special fast-track court, to hear cases related to crime against women, was inaugurated on Saturday by Supreme Court judgeM Y Eqbal in the premises of the district civil court.

The court will be presided over by a lady officer. Also, according to a high court decision, the public prosecutor will be a woman so that victims feel free to narrate their story. Additional judicial commissioner rank officer Seema Sinha has been appointed to preside over the court.

"The court has been opened according to the wish and guidance of the chief justice of India and I hope that women victims will get justice at a faster pace," said Eqbal at the event. He also asked young lawyers to be loyal to their profession and try to bring in best practices.

Chief justice of Jharkhand High Court Prakash Tatia and other judges were also present at the inaugural ceremony. On the first day of the court, around 25 cases were on the cause list.

Justice Tatia said around 300 cases of crime against women, which were at different stages of trial in various district courts, have been transferred to the special court. "Infrastructure has been provided and the appointment of Hindi and English translators has also been done for smooth functioning of the court," said Tatia.

Speaking on delays in trial of cases, Tatia said it was a common perception among people that cases get adjourned on flimsy grounds. "I request lawyers not to get trial adjourned on flimsy grounds and try their best to expedite proceedings in the interest of the society," said Tatia.
