French-Backed Mali Forces Retake Disputed Town


BAMAKO, Mali—The Malian army, backed by French troops, claimed Friday to have retaken a strategic central town from al Qaeda-linked rebels, as a multiple-front war in the country is prompting worries about the fate of civilians caught in the fighting.
Soldiers from the two countries on Friday were searching the town of Konna after driving out most rebels, according to Mali's Defense Ministry spokesman, Col. Diarran Kone. He said fighters could have stayed behind so troops were bracing for potential battles within the town.
"We're going to try to be vigilant," Col. Kone said.
