Gujarat's super chor’s maiden attempt crashes in Kankaria

Shyam Sundar Ahuja, the ‘superchor’ of Gujarat credited with 250 housebreaks, is once again behind bars. On Saturday, Ahuja, 45, was caught by residents of Sarovar Apartment in Kankaria just as he was trying to break into an apartment. He was handed over to Maninagar police.
Police investigation has revealed that Ahuja, a resident of Mahemdavad, had just come out of jail and was in search of a locked house in Kankaria. He was last arrested sometime in June 2012 by the LCB, Kheda at Khatraj crossroads with cash and jewellery stolen from four houses in Ramol area. He was then handed over to Ramol police after which he was booked, for the third time, under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (Pasa) Act and sent to Bhuj sub jail.
In his 20-year ‘career’ as a thief, Ahuja has been booked for more than 250 thefts and housebreaks in Ahmedabad, Anand, Nadiad and Kheda. Ahuja hails from Raipur in Chhattisgarh and had come to Ahmedabad during the 1980s and lived in Sardarnagar with his wife and two children. After doing some odd jobs, he turned to bootlegging and then mastered the art of daytime housebreaks. He became a fulltime thief in 1993 and has targeted more than 100 houses in Ahmedabad alone. He has amassed enormous wealth from these break-ins and built several houses and shops in city and Mahemdavad. At present he lives with his family in a two-storey bungalow at Mahemdavad.
His simple but effective modus operandi includes working alone. He always targeted closed houses during afternoon with a screw driver and metal rod and vanished with stolen booty on his bike or car.
