Kerala gets new court to try sexual violence cases

KOCHI: An additional district and sessions court has been set up here for trying cases related tosexual violence and atrocities against women and children.

Inaugurating the court at a function here on Sunday, Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabirstressed the need to focus on childcare and rehabilitation in the juvenile justice system. "These children need our prime attention. We need to sensitise ourselves to see that we do something for this section of the society which has been marginalised," he said.

The CJI requested chief justices of various high courts to set up a court in every district where such cases can be taken up.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Justice Manjula Chellur said there was a plan to set up a single and division bench to exclusively hear crimes against women. "In the high court, a new single and division bench can be thought of to deal with crime against women," she said.

Chief minister Oommen Chandy said the Bill for Protection of Womenis being prepared by incorporating the provisions of death penalty or imprisonment for life with fine in case of death of women due to harassment.
