Kolkata: The wait is finally over. Kolkata has gotten its brand new state-of-the-art integrated airport terminal. With 128 check-in counters, plush VIP lounge and in-line baggage handling facilities, Terminal 2 can accommodate more than 7,000 passengers per hour.
Finance Minister Amit Mitra put it quite aptly, "The changing environment of West Bengal.. the new Bengal... the changing constellation.. this new airport is a symbol."
Touted as a green building with five tiers, Terminal 2 is also a monument to Bengal's leading icons Rabindranath Tagore and Subhash Chandra Bose. Letters from Gitanjali dot the ceiling while an 18 ft high sculpture of Netaji adorns the exterior.
Anita Bose Pfaff, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's daughter, beamed, "It's a nice memorial that the airport is named after him. The fact that it's such a beautiful building proves that Kolkata is at the forefront of significant change."
Four years and Rs 2800 crore on, Terminal 2 will finally take off with the first flight on January 23, coinciding with Netaji's birthday. The terminal will be fully operational by March.
As this new state-of-the-art integrated terminal becomes operational soon, Kolkata can now truly become the gateway to the east attracting not just tourists but also connecting its business potential with the rest of the world.
