KSRTC trims services in Malappuram

MALAPPURAM: Following the direction from its zonal office in Thrissur, the KSRTC has temporarily suspended more than 60 services from the four depots of the district on Thursday. The zonal office has directed all the depots in the district to suspend at least 30% of services from Thursday onwards against the backdrop of financial crisis in the corporation.

The number of services operated from the four depots till Wednesday were, 49 services from Perinthalmanna , 61 from Malappuram, 40 from Nilambur and 42 from Ponnani. But, following the strict direction to cut short the number of services, each depot has been forced to cancel 10 to 18 services per day, including inter-state services.

Forty one services from district were suspended on Wednesday itself, including eight services from Ponnani, 14 from Malappuram, 12 from Nilambur and seven from Perinthalmanna. Various pro-Left trade unions staged protests in front of the KSRTC bus depot at Malappuram town demanding the government to step back from the move. They alleged that it will not only affect the passengers but also thousands of casual workers in the corporation.

Meanwhile, talking to reporters here on Thursday the national secretary of CITU, K K Divakaran, who is also the state working president of the Kerala state road transport employees' association (KSRTEA), said the CITU will convene a meeting of trade organizations in Delhi to discuss the issues being faced by the public transport sector of different states in the country. "Representatives of 14 organizations across the country including INTUC, AITUC, and BMS will attend the meeting."

Divakaran said the state governments should think about LPG as an alternative to diesel, to resolve the crisis in transport corporations.
