Need to project Kochi Port in better light: DP World

KOCHI, JAN 30:

The terminal operator DP World is making efforts to boost the image of Kochi Port in international shipping circles to attract more vessels.

K.K. Krishnadas, Director and CEO, DP World, Kochi said there is a need to create a better image for Kochi Port, particularly in the wake of Cabotage relaxation, to attract more ships.

He was speaking at a lecture meeting — Vallarpadam, an update — organised by the Kerala Management Association.

Initially, shipping lines were quite apprehensive about the facilities available here as flash strikes and other uncertainties sent a negative signal. “This has changed now. However, collective efforts are needed to make the port a success in competition with other global terminals,” he added.

The company’s main job in the last few years was to inform shipping lines about the productivity and performance of the terminal. DP World also made efforts to project the ‘strike free image’ of the port, he said.

This seems to have started yielding results and mainline shipping companies were now sending at least one ship to Kochi on a trial basis. There were several concrete enquiries from leading shipping lines to use Kochi for its trans-shipment requirements, he added.

According to Das, the berth basins of the Vallarpadam terminal would achieve a 14.5-metre draught by February, as the Dredging Corporation of India was all set to complete the capital dredging works shortly.
