No decision on Telangana, govt seeks more time

The government on Sunday said that no deadline was given on the Telangana issue and it needs more time to consult with senior leaders of Andhra Pradesh.

"There is no deadline. We will hold consultations with Andhra Pradesh chief minister and others as early as possible," Ghulam Nabi Azad said.

Earlier, pro-Telangana activists launched a 36-hour samara deeksha (protest programme) to mount pressure on government to concede to their statehood demand after the state government granted them permission a day after police red flagged the agitation.

Earlier, scores of pro-Telangana leaders and activists, including Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLA KT Rama Rao and others, were taken into custody at different places when they attempted to march towards the protest venue - Indira Park.

"Permission has been granted to them (activists) to hold protest till 6pm tomorrow," a senior police officer said.

The state government gave in to the demand of agitators on Sunday even though police on Saturday denied the permission fearing the possibility of anti-social elements sneaking into the 'deeksha' camp.
