A technical fault in an electricity generation unit at National Thermal Power Corporation’s (NTPC) Dadri plant led to power cuts in various parts of the city on Friday morning. Though the situation eased after 1pm, officials said the fault was not rectified till late evening and there could be some power cuts on Saturday morning too.
According to officials, the fault occurred in NTPC’s Dadri – II unit, which generates 500megawatt electricity for Delhi.
The fault, said officials, occurred late Thursday night triggering power cuts in various parts of the city. Senior Delhi Transco officials said they had to resort to a load-shedding of up to 150MW on rotational basis. “Since offices are closed on Saturday and power demand is expected to be less, Delhi may not face power cuts on Saturday,” an official said.
Delhi’s peak power demand goes up to 3800 MW during this time of the year.
“The electricity supply played hide and seek in the morning. It became normal only in the afternoon,” said Rashmi Singhal, a resident of Guru Harkishan Nagar.
A discom official, however, said other sources were tapped to arrange for electricity for Delhi. “If there is any need we will arrange more power to minimise the inconvenience to consumers,” a discom spokesperson said.
NTPC’s plants at Dadri and Badarpur have been giving Delhi a tough time this winter. Due to coal shortage, power generation was affected at both units between mid-December and mid-January, leading to power cuts in the Capital.
