Priest compared Rahul Gandhi to Christ, irks Christians

Father Glenford Lowe of the Don Bosco Church in Matunga seems to have landed himself in trouble with his sermon during Monday morning’s mass where he apparently compared Rahul Gandhi to Christ.
Referring to Gandhi’s first address at the AICC session on Sunday in Jaipur after being appointed Congress V-P, Lowe said, “The BJP and others have criticised Rahul Gandhi’s speech. But our Lord also faced criticism when He first began preaching to the people. However, history shows us how Jesus’ words have prevailed.”
The congregation gathered for the service was surprised when the sermon suddenly took a political twist. Peter Nandive, 31, even managed to record the statement on camera. “Why should there be any talk of politics in the Lord’s house?” he asked.
Lowe, however, insisted he was not taking a political stand. “I was using Gandhi’s example because it’s current.”
The spokesperson for the Bombay Archdiocese, Father Anthony Charanghat, expressed shock at what he called “a lapse of judgement.” He said, “The church never supports the use of the pulpit for the furtherance of any political agenda.”
Abraham Mathai, vice-chairman of the state minorities commission, said, “The comparison does not in any way undermine His authority or even negate His divinity or immortality.”
