She won 2 medals day before tragedy

CHENNAI: On Friday, M Sushmitha, 12, completed her medal-winning 100m dash in 14.9 seconds. Little did she know that it would be her last run. She and her mother, Rohini Manoj, were among the four who drowned in the Punnamada lake on Saturday.

Sushmitha had boarded a train to Alleppey on Friday evening a happy child. She had just won a bronze medal each in the 100m dash and long jump at an inter-school athletic meet at YMCACollege, Nandanam. "She did well and bagged two bronze medals in the sub-junior girls category," said Jayashankar Menon, president of Y's Men International, which organised the event. "I was standing next to her as she displayed her medal proudly on the podium. It's hard to believe that she is gone," he said.
